Influencers are the cause of a lot of wardrobe angst, wasted money, and unnecessary bad feelings about our bodies.

At the heart of everything I know about style is individuality.

It’s been 17 years since I trained as an Image Consultant, and my training couldn’t have been further from rigid rules or one-size-fits-all formulas.

I trained privately with a brilliant Image Consultant at the very top of her game. The focus was on the subtleties: colouring, the lines our bodies make, proportions, and the small differences that mean completely different cuts, fabrics, and details will work beautifully on one person — and not at all on another.

That depth of training shaped the way I work. It’s why my clients trust me to get things right for them, not to offer surface-level ideas that look good online but fall apart in real life.

Now, I’m a big consumer of social media myself. I love YouTube videos, Instagram reels, and fashion content but time and again I find myself frustrated by the sheer amount of blanket advice being shared. Advice that’s well-intentioned, beautifully presented… and deeply unhelpful.

If you find style advice online confusing, demoralising, or expensive to follow, there’s a very good reason for that.

Let’s talk about jeans

Just today, I watched a video from a content creator who went to a well-known department store and tried on all the premium denim “so we don’t have to”. It was beautifully shot. She looked fabulous in every single pair.

And that’s the problem.

That video will only ever be genuinely helpful for someone with her proportions, her shape, and her style personality.

You might watch it and hear her describe one pair as “insane”, another as “off the scale”, another as “perfect”. Feeling inspired, you order a couple of pairs to try.

Maybe you squeeze yourself into them and realise they technically look good… but you can’t sit down.

Or the baggy legs make you feel like a 90s throwback when that’s not you at all.

Or the high waistband presses into your waist because your proportions are different to hers and suddenly you can barely breathe.

And then comes the familiar spiral.

Something must be wrong with your body if these “perfect” jeans don’t work.

If only you hadn’t eaten so much at Christmas.

Maybe you’re too old.

Too frumpy.

Not disciplined enough.

Please hear this clearly:

There is nothing wrong with your body as it is today.

It may look different to how it did ten years ago — and that is completely normal.

The truth about great style

There are jeans, trousers, dresses, and tops out there that will make you look and feel “insane”, “off the scale”, and all the other superlatives. But finding them has nothing to do with copying someone else’s recommendations.

It comes from understanding:

– Your body and the lines it makes

– How those lines translate into cuts, shapes, and fabrics

– Your colouring, so you choose shades that light you up and help you look healthy and vibrant

– Your style personality — the looks that feel like you

It sounds like a lot. And it is.

Which is exactly why I do the work I do.

Style without the pressure

I help women unravel the mysteries of their own style so they can enjoy fashion content for what it is — inspiration and entertainment — without feeling pulled to buy all the things all the time.

When you understand what works for you, you stop second-guessing yourself. You stop blaming your body. And you start building a wardrobe that feels intentional, confident, and completely yours.

And remember, even the “perfect” jeans won’t work if the rest of the outfit doesn’t respect your proportions. We are all unique.

Find your version of fabulous.

Find your confident style.
