I find that January has a quiet, slow energy, which I love.
After the excitement of the festive season, I embrace a kind of hibernation period during January. I look forward to gentle desk days for planning and creating, followed by cosy evenings in front of the roaring fire. No pressure to be out and about and lots of rest.
I know that not everyone loves this time of year and for some, motivation can be super low.
How are you finding January?
Is choosing an outfit on a dark, cold morning feeling too much?
If so, I’m here to encourage and motivate you to make it easy.
Getting dressed doesn’t have to be complicated or uncomfortable. Without too much effort, I promise that you can reach for clothes that feel soft and cosy while still making you look and feel the way you want.
Here’s what to do…
1. find your low effort outfits
Low-energy days call for simplicity, softness, and ease. The goal isn’t to create super-stunning fashionista moments. Instead I want you to think about how to feel good and look pulled together with minimal effort and zero fuss.
Here’s how:
Try the Two-Step Outfit Formula
When in doubt, follow this super-simple approach:
Step 1: Start by choosing a comfortable base.
Think of pieces that feel like loungewear but aren’t your old scruffs. What could you use?
– A soft knitted matching set
– Leggings with a longline top or jumper
– A jersey or jumper dress
– Tailored joggers
Step 2: Add one structured piece.
This is the part that makes the difference. By adding just one polished or structured piece you can instantly elevate your basic outfit into something more stylish and intentional.
Try adding:
– A cardigan coat – a ‘coatigan’
– A knitted vest/waistcoat
– A tailored jersey blazer (Whistles do some great ones)
– A shirt worn open (over a basic layer) in a thick, soft fabric
This two-step method creates the look of a thoughtfully styled outfit—with almost no thinking required.
2. embrace your best colours
On low-energy mornings, wearing your best shades and tones of colour will instantly lift your complexion and brighten your eyes. I can’t emphasise enough the role that colour plays in lifting your energy and your mood. (And how the wrong shades can make you look dull and feel tired.)
Whether you choose your best neutrals or your more fun colours, you’ll get an instant boost when you wear them.
If you haven’t yet had your own colours analysed and are ready to be educated, email me at helen@helenreynoldsstyle.com and I’ll let you know how I can help you to get clear on your very best colours. It might just be the best thing you ever do for yourself!
3. Prioritise Feel-Good Fabrics
When your energy is low, I find that sensory comfort becomes even more important. Choose fabrics that feel soft, warm, and flexible. My favourites are:
– Modal
– Ribbed knit
– Ponte
– Merino or cashmere blends
– Soft brushed cotton
These materials drape beautifully, resist wrinkling, and keep you comfortable all day.
4. elevate the outfit
It’s now time to think about minimal touches that will add the polish you need to feel fabulous. You don’t need a full face of makeup or a perfectly styled hairdo to look put-together. A few tiny touches can go a long way.
Try:
– A headband or claw clip
– Simple earrings
– A cosy scarf in one of your most flattering tones
– Tinted lip balm + brushed brows
These extras elevate your look in seconds and help you feel more prepared to face the day.
5. Create 3–5 “Auto-Pilot” Outfits
An auto-pilot outfit is one that you’ve pre-planned for exactly these kind of days. They’re reliable, comfortable, and make you feel like yourself. Hang them at the front of your wardrobe or save them as photos on your phone for instant inspiration.
When energy is low it’s so much more difficult to make decisions. Having your outfits ready is a game-changer.
6. Emotional Comfort can be important
One of the many things I bang on about is the incredible impact that clothes can have on how we feel on any given day.
When you feel good in your outfit, you’re more likely to have increased energy, feel more positive and have more fun.
Clothes can really affect how we feel and on low-energy days it’s even more important to get it right.
Try choosing pieces that:
– Remind you of good memories
– Feel soft to touch
– Make you feel grounded
– Don’t pinch, squeeze, or need constant adjusting (this is vital!)
Sometimes the best outfit is the one that simply feels kind.
Why This Matters in January
January is a month to move slowly—and there’s beauty in that. Getting dressed doesn’t have to involve pressure or perfection. With the right pieces and a few easy habits, you can accept your lower energy while still feeling like the best version of yourself.
Low-energy doesn’t mean low-style. It just means you get to dress with softness, comfort, and intention.

Brilliant timely advice for January Helen! Thank you
Glad you found it useful Claire x
My burgundy velvet lounge pants ( from M&S years ago) are my go to in the house but smart enough to go to the shops. Alternatively one of my Llama Leisure leggings in purple or purple/pink/blue mix when I am walking out somewhere. I find fit is great. Very tempted to get a lined pair too.
Purple or Pink sweatshirt or fleece on top with “fur lined,” gilet
Sounds like you’ve got it sorted Alison! x
I love reading your blogs Helen and I completely agree about January being a good time for reflecting, planning and also decluttering. I find it an enriching time.
Thanks for your comment Victoria. Enjoy x
Thank you Helen, you’ve hit the nail on the head, January has always felt to me to be a month that just needs to be ‘got through’ on the way to Spring.
Thank you too for all your advice over the past 14 or so years; even approaching my 80th birthday next month, I still enjoy and find very useful, the content of your blogs.
Wishing you a very happy and successful 2026.
