Finding Your Perfect Fit: When your clothes fit how you are and who you are

Have you ever purchased something that looked brilliant on the hanger but never quite felt right when you wore it? Too many women have wardrobes filled with items that fit their bodies but somehow don’t fit them as people.

Who you are as a person dictates your true style and is equally important as finding the right fit. There’s a common belief that if you are invited to a summer wedding, you’ll need a pretty dress and matching shoes/fascinator/jacket. The problem is, if floral fabrics and flouncy styles aren’t you, you’ll feel like you are playing dress up the whole day.

In my work, I love to focus on why personal style matters, just as much as finding the right fit. I’m obsessed with how discovering your true style can transform your outfits and your confidence to wear the ‘right’ things.

The Physical “Fit”

When we talk about clothes fitting, we might think about our physical proportions:

  • Does it sit properly on your shoulders?
  • Is the waistband comfortable?
  • Does the length work for your height?

But there’s another equally important meaning of fit that’s often overlooked—how well the outfit fits your personality, lifestyle and sense of self.

Why Personal Style Matters

Personal style isn’t about following trends or wearing what fashion magazines dictate. It’s about:

  • Expressing who you truly are
  • Feeling confident and authentic in what you wear
  • Having an identifiable style personality
  • Simplifying decision-making when shopping
  • Building a wardrobe where everything works together

My client Kate summed this up beautifully after a particularly successful Personal Shopping trip:

I love my new clothes and the way they fit me – and I don’t just mean shape and size-wise – Helen helped me find the ability to express myself through the art of getting dressed!” Kate Wolf

The Connection Between Identity and Clothing

Our outfits communicate something about us before we even speak. When there’s alignment between how we see ourselves and how we present ourselves, something magical happens. You stop feeling like you’re “playing dress-up” and instead feel like you’re authentically yourself.

Finding Your Personal Style

Discovering your personal style isn’t always easy or straightforward, but these tips will help. (If you’d like my eyes on your style, head on over to my website services page here.

  • Analyse what you reach for most often in your wardrobe
  • Identify which outfits make you feel most confident
  • Consider your lifestyle needs and practical requirements
  • Create mood boards of styles that resonate with you
  • Experiment with different silhouettes, colours and textures

The Joy of a Cohesive Wardrobe

When you understand your personal style, shopping becomes more intentional. Rather than purchasing random items that catch your eye, you begin to build a thoughtful collection of pieces that:

  • Work together harmoniously
  • Reflect your authentic self
  • Serve your actual lifestyle
  • Bring you joy when you wear them
  • Last beyond fleeting trends

Understanding your personal style also helps combat the waste associated with fast fashion. When you know what truly suits you—both physically and personally—you’re less likely to make impulsive purchases that end up unworn at the back of your wardrobe.

By investing time in understanding your personal style, you’ll build a collection of clothes you truly love to wear, saving money, reducing waste and feeling more confident in the process.

Remember the most sustainable clothes are ones you’ll wear again and again because they truly fits you in every sense of the word.

Style is to be enjoyed, so it’s worth the effort to find yours.
