Get Your Style Right This Festive Season
Looking and feeling sparkly this festive season doesn’t have to mean sequins, glitter, or uncomfortable heels.
Over the years, I’ve noticed a bit of a myth that “Christmas outfit” automatically equals shiny dress and stilettos. But if that’s not your usual vibe, why start now?
There are so many ways to look and feel festive without going anywhere near a sequin or dress — especially if you wouldn’t normally wear one for the other 364 days of the year.
Here are five fabulous, non-shiny ideas to help you feel confident, comfortable, and totally yourself this party season.
- Outfit Formula for the “Naturals”
If your style leans towards relaxed and effortless, stick with your go-to shapes — just elevate the fabrics.
Try this:
- Swap your wide-leg jeans for velvet trousers and pair them with a fine knit in one of your favourite colours.
- Forget the heels! This season is all about stylish flats — loafers, metallic ballet pumps, or even chic ankle boots.
Or, keep your favourite jeans and simply add a “wow” blazer — velvet, silk, or a classic tux jacket. It’s the easiest way to level up your look while still feeling like you.
Want a sprinkle of sparkle without going full disco ball? Add one statement piece — a metallic scarf, bold necklace, or shimmery boots. Just enough to catch the light.
- The “Nothing New” Repeatable Outfit
Want to look put-together without spending a penny (or buying another “wear-once” dress)? This one’s for you.
Shop your own wardrobe. Pick a dress, jumpsuit, or co-ord in a neutral or solid colour — you probably already have one. Then, give it a festive twist with statement jewellery, fun shoes, and a clutch.
The best bit? You can wear the same outfit again later — just tone it down with trainers or a denim jacket. Sustainable and stylish.
- Full-On Fancy Pants
If you’re someone who loves to dress up (and December is your runway), it’s worth investing in a few mix-and-match pieces that can create endless glam combinations.
Think timeless, not trendy:
- Satin skirt
- Silk blouse
- Mohair short-sleeved knit (cream, red, green, or classic black)
- Velvet trousers
- Velvet blazer
These few items can create at least eight outfit combinations — and that’s before you start switching up shoes, bags, and accessories.
- Don’t Forget the Coat
You’ve perfected your outfit — don’t cover it with a tired old anorak on your way out!
A long wool coat instantly adds polish and goes with just about everything.
And for a bit of fun? Try a faux fur coat — they’re warm, glam, and making a huge comeback this winter.
- Plan Ahead & Enjoy the Fun
A little outfit planning goes a long way. Sort your looks early, and you’ll skip the last-minute panic buying and focus on what actually matters — having fun!
So, pull out your favourites, mix things up, and wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself.

Hi Helen
This blog is so timely! Just sat deciding whether or not to keep or send back a brown sequin skirt that I love, but really isn’t very me!! I think you’ve made my mind up for me…. It’s going back!!
Also earlier today I repaired some old ‘fancy’ trousers that I’ve had for at least 20 years! They come out every Christmas but I don’t care how old they are – they feel good on!!
Thank you!!!
I’m so pleased this came at the right time for you. I realise I usually leave my festive dressing blogs until too late for pepople so I’m happy you’ve been able to make your decisions early!
