Dressing Stylishly in Hot Weather: A Guide for Busy Women

It’s time to start talking about summer dressing.

When the mercury rises, looking put-together while feeling comfortable can feel like a real challenge. Especially when you are busy with a thousand other more important things.

The thing is, you know that when you feel good in your outfit it directly impacts your confidence levels and your energy throughout the day. So it’s worth getting organised and making a plan. (If you want a bespoke plan, make sure you book your place at The Style Plan LIVE here! It’s happening in two weeks!)

The secret to summer style? It starts with fabrics.

  • Natural fibres are absolute game-changers. Cotton, linen, and lightweight silk let your skin breathe properly. Rather than trapping all that heat and moisture against your skin (creating that horrid, panicky too hot feeling!), these fabrics actually help wick it away. Avoid polyester like the plague.
  • A brilliant middle-ground option is a cotton-linen blend. You get the cooling benefits of linen without ending up looking like you’ve slept in your outfit by lunchtime.
  • Quality really matters here. It might be tempting to grab those bargain basics, but better-quality natural fabrics actually perform differently in heat – they maintain their structure and keep you looking polished even when it’s sweltering outside.

Now, about those silhouettes…

Think ‘skimming’ rather than ‘clinging’. Anything that creates a bit of space between fabric and skin allows for natural ventilation. A-line dresses, palazzo trousers, slightly oversized shirts – these are your best hot weather options.

Waistbands can be absolute torture when it’s hot, can’t they? If you know you look best with a cinched in waist (it’s not for all of us – you’ll learn why at The Style Plan LIVE!, look for dresses with empire waists, paper-bag waist trousers, or elasticated waistbands in nice fabrics – your mid-section will thank you.

Length-wise, midi works brilliantly.

If you don’t like getting your legs out in shorts or shorter skirts and dresses, midi lengths are a great option. You get coverage but still allow air to circulate. And with the resurgence of popularity of culottes, they are another great option for hotter days. All the comfort of shorts but less holiday-y.

Colours and patterns aren’t just about adding interest – they’re practical too!

Light colours are your summer allies. While many women feel ‘safe’ in their blacks and navies, lighter shades actually reflect heat rather than absorbing it. A crisp white shirt or soft cream dress isn’t just stylish – it’s significantly cooler to wear.

Patterns can trick the eye and make you feel less self-conscious. If you’re worried about perspiration marks (we’ve all been there!), a printed top or dress with darker patterns in strategic areas works wonders.

Accessories become even more important when your clothing needs to be minimal:

  • Statement jewellery really earns its keep in summer. When your outfit needs to be simple and light, bold earrings or an eye-catching necklace can transform the plainest dress without adding any warmth.
  • A lightweight scarf is surprisingly versatile. Use it to add interest to a simple outfit, protect against aggressive air conditioning, or shield shoulders from too much sun.
  • Footwear needs to work extra hard. Invest in quality sandals with proper support – your feet swell in heat, and you’ll feel the difference after a long day. Look for metallic finishes or unique details that make practical shoes feel stylish.

Extra tips we can all learn from:

  • Layering becomes a strategic exercise. Keep a lightweight blazer or cardigan handy for freezing air-conditioned buildings, but ensure it’s easy to remove when you dash back outside.
  • Your handbag kit. Pop some wipes, travel sized deodorant and a refreshing facial mist in your handbag – five minutes in the loo can completely refresh your look if you are out all day and need a refresh.
  • Low-maintenance pieces are worth their weight in gold. Look for items that resist wrinkling and don’t show sweat marks easily. These will become your wardrobe heroes.

How to build a heat-ready wardrobe from scratch:

  • Start with 2-3 quality summer dresses. These one-piece wonders make dressing so simple while keeping you comfortable and looking pulled together. Change up the looks using different accessories and footwear.
  • Wide-leg trousers in lightweight fabrics give you the coverage of trousers with brilliant ventilation – win-win!
  • Cotton, linen and silk blend tops work beautifully alone or under light jackets for those chilly indoor environments.
  • A well-cut linen blazer instantly elevates casual pieces for important meetings. Yes, it will crease a bit, but that’s part of its charm. Just make sure there isn’t a polyester lining!

I want you to get to a place where you can get dressed for the day, and then stop thinking about what you are wearing. When you’re physically comfortable, you create space to focus on your busy day rather than constantly adjusting uncomfortable straps/waistbands. Spend some time working out your hot weather everyday outfits and spare yourself some stress this summer.

If you need specific help with this, you really must join us for The Style Plan LIVE! Don’t worry if you can’t make all of the day, we’ll record it for you to catch up on. Just make sure you’ve reserved your place!
